Competences of Economic Crime Investigators

Purpose:

The purpose of this paper is to present competences of economic crime investigators that are required for good work performance.

Methods:

The paper is theoretical and it is based on the literature review. The deduction approach was used to identify specific competences of economic crime investigators that are required for good work performance.

Findings:

Economic crime is a harmful and inevitable phenomenon, and a specific problem of modern society, causing several million in deficit to national budgets. In order to successfully detect and investigate such criminal offences it is necessary to have highly qualified and competent investigators and experts from various institutional environments that must cooperate in specialized investigative teams. Investigators must possess various competences, especially good communication and analytical skills. They should have knowledge of criminal investigation, law, economics, banking, accounting, IT, and they should understand the specifics of economic operations in business companies, financial institutions, public institutions and enterprises.

Originality/Value:

The paper aims at leaders of institutions dealing with economic crime, as well as others who are interested in this issue.
